Being proficient at the short game also requires being able to read the lie before you. Knowing how a lie will react gives you the choice to play the best kind of shot necessary to get that ball close to hole and up and down. Save shots by knowing the lie.
The worse the lie is- just make an adjustment to your setup. The heel of the club can grab in the grass- the toe end cuts through the grass. Toe down is the "lowdown" to better chips from poor lies
The short game is all about confidence and trust. Growing up in Melbourne I was always better at the chip and run shot than the lofted shot. The courses I played gave me this option so I played it more and knew I could play it well.
